How voltage changes as a cell discharges

We read these approximate points from the manufacturer’s 1C and 4C discharge curves. 4S values add the voltages of identical cells at the same discharge state. These pack views are calculated from the single-cell curve, rather than measured on a pack.
At 1.25 Ah discharged: approximately 12.92 V at 1C and 12.44 V at 4C.

We read selected points from the published graph and rounded them to 0.01 V. Our approximate reading uncertainty is ±0.03 V per cell; this is not a manufacturer tolerance. The straight lines help you follow the curve between points. We left out points near cutoff because the steep graph makes them difficult to read reliably. This cell is rated at 3.3 V nominal with a typical capacity of 2.6 Ah. Other LiFePO4 products use 3.2 V nominal. Use your own battery specifications to set charging and cutoff voltages.
12V, 24V and 48V LiFePO4 reference voltages
Four, eight and sixteen cells in series commonly give nominal ratings of 12.8, 25.6 and 51.2 V when the cells are rated at 3.2 V. Series connection adds voltage; parallel connection adds capacity. Check the chemistry and cell count on the battery label or datasheet, since several battery types use a 48V label.
The table below uses Victron Lithium Smart specifications. These are charger settings and reference ratings for a different product from the Lithium Werks cell plotted above.

Victron specifies nominal capacity at 25 °C and a discharge current of 1C or less. Its operating temperature ranges are +5 to +50 °C for charging and −20 to +50 °C for discharging. The voltage settings apply while a charger is connected, rather than at open circuit. We calculate the single-cell and 16S values from the published 4S/8S specifications; they are not separate test results.
Can voltage tell me the battery’s state of charge?
Voltage alone cannot give an exact percentage. The discharge plot shows a long, nearly flat region, and the same cell’s voltage changes with current. Temperature, ageing, imbalance and recent charging also affect the reading. Use a calibrated battery monitor or BMS that tracks charge flow when you need a remaining-capacity estimate.
Resting, loaded and charging readings
A resting reading is taken with charging and loads disconnected after the battery has relaxed according to its manufacturer’s measurement procedure. The source data here was recorded under load, so we cannot use it to match resting voltages to charge percentages. Under load, voltage falls; during charging, the charger raises terminal voltage. A float setting is not a resting full-charge measurement.
Sources and method
Lithium Werks 26650 Data Sheet, August 2022, SF00008 rev 2, page 2 contains the discharge curves and cell ratings used here. The manufacturer recorded the 1C and 4C discharge curves under load at 25 °C ambient in open air. These are not resting or open-circuit readings, so a rest duration does not apply and is not specified. The plotted points are our readings of the graph, rather than raw test data. Multiplying voltage by the series count also multiplies the reading uncertainty. The pack views assume identical cells in series and do not account for parallel capacity or cell imbalance.
