Reading battery energy in Wh and kWh

Wh and kWh both measure energy. Portable battery labels may use Wh while larger battery systems use kWh. A 2,048 Wh rating is 2.048 kWh; the unit change leaves the energy unchanged.

Keep the h when copying a rating. W and kW measure power, while Wh and kWh include time. A steady 100 W load uses 1,000 Wh, or 1 kWh, over ten hours.

Formula and worked example

kWh = Wh ÷ 1,000

Wh = kWh × 1,000

2,048 Wh ÷ 1,000 = 2.048 kWh. Reversing gives 2.048 kWh × 1,000 = 2,048 Wh.

How many Wh are in 1 kWh?

Exactly 1,000 Wh. A 5.12 kWh battery has a nominal energy rating of 5,120 Wh.

Is a 1 kWh battery the same as a 1 kW battery?

Those ratings describe different things. A 1 kWh rating is an amount of energy. A 1 kW output rating describes how quickly the battery system can supply energy. Runtime also depends on usable capacity and losses.

Does this calculate charging cost?

It only converts energy units. A charging-cost estimate also needs your electricity price and the energy drawn from the outlet, which includes charging losses.
